WHAT YOU CAN DO IF YOU HAVE A PLUMBING OR HEATING EMERGENCY
In any emergency, whether that's a gas leak or a water leak, start off by making sure that the main stop valve has been isolated.
If it’s a gas leak, there is a quarter-turn lever valve to the left-hand side of your gas meter that can be closed by turning it 90° to the left or right.
If it’s a water leak, knowing where your main internal stopcock is located is very helpful. Once located, turn the stopcock handle clockwise until it will not turn anymore, in order to cut off water supply to the property.
If you don't know where your internal stopcock is, you'll need to cut off the water supply to the property. The Thames Water website provides additional guidance on how to turn off your internal and/or external water supply.
